The PitchWebThe PitchWeb is a new musical instrument for the Web. Anybody can play it. With the PitchWeb, listeners are allowed to design their own unique concert experience--from passively listening to actively performing or contributing--and to experience the music in a dynamic, hands-on way. The PitchWeb also encourages players of all abilities to participate in Cathedral by performing either alone (solo or with accompaniment), with one another in groups, or live with the Cathedral Band during one of its performances in an ongoing series of webcasts. To celebrate the live Powerhouse performance of Erik Satie's 18 hour and 40 minute work Vexations [1893], the Cathedral Band will be joined by listeners around the world in creating an 8-day Virtual Vexations, played on the PitchWeb with sound banks especially created for the performance. On-line listeners around the world are invited to join in. Live feeds from this performance will be used throughout the week, including during the Cathedral Band performances when they will be mixed in to the concerts. The PitchWeb is played by selecting and manipulating shapes from a palette that are mapped to banks of sound samples. Alternately, sounds may be produced by typing in words or phrases in any language. These words are then automatically converted into musical passages. Playback can either be automatic, by movements of the computer mouse, or by directly playing the computer keyboard. Additional Information Technical requirements for viewing the PitchWeb To fully experience Cathedral, viewers need a recent browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator, with a 56K modem. The following plug-ins are needed:
Listeners with some, but not all of these plug-ins, will experience a more limited version of Cathedral.
