Stephen Montague was born in 1943 in Syracuse, NY and grew up in West Virginia and Florida. He studied piano and composition at Florida State University and received a doctorate in composition from Ohio State University. He went to Europe in 1972 as a Fulbright Scholar (Poland, 1972-74), then to England as a composer-in-residence with the Strider Dance Company (London, 1974-75). Since 1975 he has worked as a free-lance composer, conductor and pianist based in London. His works have been performed on numerous festivals, particularly in Europe.
